Hazard Risk Services

Staged Adaptation

Building infrastructure to withstand all potential environmental hazards is cost prohibitive, especially since a worst-case scenario may not occur. With Staged Adaptation, infrastructure is built assuming that it will be modified in the future as actual risks escalate. Risks are monitored; when acceptable risks move to unacceptable risks, infrastructure is adapted without the need to retrofit or rebuild existing structures. These tipping points are determined by the client and their risk appetite.

Staged Adaptation

Although Staged Adaptation may cost more upfront compared to ‘building as usual’, the reduction in risks is significantly decreased while the preparedness for increased hazard risks is significantly increased. Staged Adaptation is cost effective, reducing both costs and environmental risks/hazard exposures and over the life of the infrastructure.

Infrastructure Risk Services

Environment changes significantly increases risks on infrastructure, including damage from extreme weather events like flooding, heat waves, droughts, wildfires, and coastal erosion, particularly impacting transportation systems like roads, bridges, and airports, as well as coastal infrastructure due to rising sea levels, potentially leading to disruptions in services, increased maintenance costs, and safety hazards. Existing infrastructure is often not designed to withstand these new weather patterns and extreme events. Understanding how potential environmental hazards may change is key to developing risks reduction plans.
